Re: If its not one thing its another......
Sat, July 16, 2005 - 6:42 PMNathan - good for you!
I have to share this. We live in an established, upper middle class neighborhood that is kind of snotty (we're the poor people here). The other night, my husband and I were coming home from dinner and saw that someone had put a fairly good looking tv out on the curb with a note saying "FREE". We have a friend who is going through a really tough divorce, and was left with next to nothing. So we picked up the tv and took it over to her. (She has a tv, which we also gave to her, that has the strangest color - everyone looks like spumoni). Anyway, we get this thing to her house, and it doesn't work. Crap! So, we loaded it up and brought it back and left it right back where we got it.
Just had to share that. Boy, have I learned MY lesson. -

Re: If its not one thing its another......
Thu, July 21, 2005 - 9:29 AMI guess its true that you get what you pay for. I overheard a guy at the airport this past weekend say, "i dont want to go anywhere where they say you're going to get something free. cuz nothing free is worthwhile, its all crap!" SO TRUE!
Nathan, congrats on your fancy schmancy new computer! THank god they are getting cheaper, it makes it easier to upgrade. Someday i would like to get a laptop. What did we do with ourselves before we had computers??? -

Re: If its not one thing its another......
Thu, July 21, 2005 - 5:51 PMI LOVE getting cool stuff from the trash. I aint proud. Growing up our house was furnished with "curb decorations". I mean our house was very clean and organized, but we didnt BUY furniture. My dad did upholstery and refinishing, and my mom kept stuff clean. NOw that Im older Im a bit more discreet, but as i kid I always scored. There was an old folks apartment complex down the street, Its amazing how much legal tender they toss out. I even found a diary thats well over 100 years old from a farmer in lapeer county Mich. It was borrowed by that counties historical society and transcribed (ever try to read old pen and ink ornate writing?). I say if ya see it ,want it, take it ! Hey lorinda (wink) . I thought about JUST getting a laptop this time around.... would be nice. Specially if i could sit at work watchin dvd'd and surfin. I was afraid of the smaller hard drives. Before i had a computer I use to interact with people IN PERSON....lol. take care all...N8N -

Re: If its not one thing its another......
Fri, July 22, 2005 - 1:33 PMNathan I wish I COULD do the dumspter/sidewalk shopping thing. I'm not even able to go into a thrift store. Its weird, there is this smell the minute you walk in the door....its that old musty smell...its just yucky! Dont even get me started on garage sales...I just hate to look at other people's junk, even though in theory, i KNOW that you can find some great stuff.
You'd think I grew up rich with this kind of high-falutin attitude, but its just the opposite! my parents were poor and we had the same old everything for 25 years. I'm sure there's some kind of past-life experience thats causing my inability to make treasure out of trash *laughs*

Sat, July 23, 2005 - 9:05 AMoh no.... u need counseling. LOL. Im not as attached to thrifting since i got my lil dog. Seems if he cant go someplace, i dont go. Its used to be highly entertaining to me too. Alot of the good thrift store around here closed too. I think the high cost of real estate did alot of them in. Very sad for me . Since Im a old 501 jean and tshirt guy, i get alot of clothing from them too. right before i moved I was up to about 60 pair of jeans, over 300 t-shirts, and well over 100 retro kinda buttondown shirts.... not to mention a pretty cool costume trunk....do bad i dont dress up,,,,, amybe i need the help, sigh, take care N8N -

a man that likes to play dress up ;}
"I love a man in a uniform...." (Gang of 4)

frugality + creativity + talent = ooh la la *o* that's a different manifestation from the normal/average that you usually see -
